Show 11: So much to do but so little time!

13 Mar

This week’s show is all about time management. As emerging photographers, we are often starting our business alongside an existing career and as we also have personal commitments thrown into the mix too, it can get pretty stressful and its easy to feel pretty overwhelmed with everything we have to do. So either if you’re an emerging photographer experiencing these kinds of issues or already running a successful business, but still cannot see the wood for the trees, this show is just for you!

Firstly, joining me this week is Dr Mike Clayton. Mike is a successful speaker and author of such fantastic books as Brilliant Time Management and Brilliant Influence which have proved hugely successful in the business community. Mike will be guiding us through some useful ideas and practices for taking a step back and re-evalutating what we should be doing, rather than what we think we should be doing.

Then we have emerging photographer Claudia Carter from Carter Imaging in Edinburgh, UK. Claudia has set herself the target of building up a strong portfolio in order to form a business in 2011. Alongside this Claudia also runs Photography Events UK, a fantastic resource for the photographic community whereby photographers can locate photography related events in the UK.

As always, we’d love to hear your questions for any of my guests. You can connect with us by tweeting your questions to @photonightlive by 5pm (GMT) on Monday 11th April 2011 with the hashtag #Time.

The show will go out on Friday 15th April from 7pm (GMT).

We’d also absolutely love to hear your views, comments and feedback on this show, so please leave your comments in the space below.

Show 08: Blogging 101 – Showcasing your life online

11 Mar

This week’s show is all about Blogging! As Photographers, a regular blog is so integral to our armoury it can often be overwhelming when starting out as it is all about, of course, putting yourself out there.

And boy have I gone to the top of the tree with this one!…..thank me later.. 😉

Firstly, joining me this week is the uber-blogger herself Kat Williams from the hugely successful Rock n Roll Bride. Kat will be taking us through her rise to becoming one of the world’s most influential bloggers whilst answering some of our questions and throwing some advice in for good measure.

Then we have the fantastic Ali Lovegrove from Ali Lovegrove Photography. Ali is an emerging photographer from Lincoln, UK who has quickly built up an impressive portfolio and blog, showcasing her love of photography. Ali contacted me earlier this week after Kat and I put a few Tweets out asking for guys to come forward who were in the early days of their blogging and really could do with some guidance. We were so impressed with Ali’s submission that we just had to introduce her to you guys.

(Also a BIG thank you to all of you who also sent submissions in to me. You should have all got an email back now, so like I say, if you wanna be involved in a future show, I’d LOVE to hear your ideas).

As always, we’d love to hear your questions for any of my guests. You can connect with us by tweeting your questions to @photonightlive by 5pm (GMT) on Wednesday 23rd March 2011.

The show will go out on Friday 25th March from 7pm (GMT).

We’d also absolutely love to hear your views, comments and feedback on this show, so please leave your comments in the space below.

Show 07: How not to be like everybody else and succeed as YOU!

10 Mar

[ week’s show is all about succeeding as YOU! As emerging photographers, we sometimes get too caught up in ‘what we should be doing’ to be successful. With everyone having an opinion as you frantically find your feet, it can be pretty overwhelming and a lot of the time we miss the fact that the only way we can truly be successful both professionally and personally is when we are ourselves.

This week, it’s a little bit different. No emerging photographers, but two guys at the top of their game who I just HAD to pull together for this discussion!

Firstly, joining me this week is David Esquire from Esquire Photography. David is an awesome wedding photographer from Orange County, USA who has a larger than life, fun persona which is really infectious and great to be around. With a photographic background spanning three decades, David’s career has seen him photograph weddings, veer off into another direction photographing extreme sports in the 90’s and then back again shooting weddings bringing a fabulous signature style and ‘good time guy’ attitude in all that he does.

Then we have the ace Richard P Walton from Photo Graffiti in Newport, South Wales. Richard has had an amazing start to his career seeing him receive commissions from fashion magazines, high street clothing and footwear brands as well as many fashion assignments for Voice magazine and also MTV. In January this year, Richard was also crowned ‘Overall Portrait Winner’ of the International SWPP 20×16 Print Competition 2011. His no holds-barred approach to what he does allows him to keep producing his signature style of imagery which continues to gain him both artistic and commercial praise.

We’d also absolutely love to hear your views, comments and feedback on this show, so please leave your comments in the space below.

Show 06: So You Want to be a Boudoir Photographer?

6 Mar

This week’s show is all about Boudoir Photography. It’s a genre that I’m seeing more and more existing photographers branching out to, so I’m really excited about the three guests we have on this week.

We will be discussing all you need to know from starting out, making the right connections and having the right attitude, all the way through to getting those all important shoots themselves.

Firstly, joining me this week are not one, but TWO fabulous guests! I’m so stoked to really have some of the best boudoir photographers on the planet in Marissa Boucher & Kimberlee West, owners & creators of THE BOUDOIR DIVAS studio in San Diego, USA. These ladies have a truly awesome portfolio, run a very successful studio and also provide some fantastic resources for upcoming boudoir photographers.

Then we have emerging boudoir photographer Sara Thomas from from Suffolk, UK. You may have already come across Sara’s work as she is already an awesome wedding and portrait photographer with a beautiful, timeless style to her work. Sara is now wanting to branch out into offering boudoir photography to her female clients, so I’m sure she’ll have a ton of questions to ask Marissa and Kimberlee.

We’d love to hear your views, comments and feedback on this show, so please leave your comments in the space below.

Anyways, on this week’s show Dane talks to Seth Godin. If you’ve never checked out Seth’s writing, AGAIN you’ve been missing out, check him out here. PNL Hot Links: Back Up Workflow Advice from Chase Jarvis, Scott Kelby & Timothy Armes

28 Feb

Hey Guys, I was recently searching online for some guidance around the best workflow for backing up and archiving your files when I came across some awesome resources that I just HAD to share with you.

The above video comes from Chase Jarvis and gives a real insight into his tried-and-tested, bomb proof workflow. But after watching it, I was thinking like, ‘yeah thats cool and everything, but what about little ‘ol me working on a much smaller scale?’. Well, after a bit more digging I came across this brilliant blog post from Timothy Armes which is kind of a response to Chase’s post, giving his own version on a much smaller scale! Brilliant!

And finally, if you’re hungry for just one more golden nugget of workflow information, I highly recommend Scott Kelby’s article here, which gives you his take on the subject.

I hope you take away as much as I have from these posts. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments area below. RD

PNL Hot Links: RD’s Recommended Reading List

28 Feb

I often get asked via social media and at meet-ups which books and resources I would recommend with regards to both practical photography and the business of photography.

So I thought I’d just get it all down in a blog post so that you guys can see what I’d recommend, as when asked I usually cant think of the author or a title of a particular book! 🙂

I’ll also update this list continually so that you can just keep coming back if you’d like a new recommendation at any time. Enjoy! RD

The Business of photography:

The Fast Track Photographer – Dane Sanders
– I SIMPLY CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH!! You may have heard me harp on about this before, but it really is the book that was the game changer for me.

The Fast Track Photographer: Business Plan – Dane Sanders

– This is the follow up to the above book, so dont read this one first! 🙂 At the time of writing I havent yet digested it fully but it really is inspiring my business already.

Crush It! – Gary Vaynerchuck

– Again, a book I HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you want to know how to effectively change career to something you have passion for, or maybe want to leverage social media to your own advantage in business.

Get into bed with Google – Jon Smith

– A really useful book on SEO that you can pick up at anytime and get chunks of info. Its also cleverly written so you don.t have to be an IT pro to read it like some of the other books out there.

Practical Photography:

The Complete Guide to Professional Wedding Photography – Damien Lovegrove

– One of the first photography books I purchased and I continue to go back to this book time and time again.

Contemporary Wedding Photography – Julie Oswin

– This one is a corker for the price. It’s not just practical but deals with all aspects of your wedding photography business.

The Art of Children’s Portrait Photography – Tamara Lackey

– If you photograph children, this is a must have. I especially liked how this book talked about how you approach different types of children to photography them effectively.

Digital Photography Boot Camp – Kevin Kubota

– From the absolute master of workflow, this comprehensive book gives you pretty much all you need to know when working in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Show 05: PNL Essentials – Book Keeping, Accountancy & Tax

28 Feb

This weeks show is the first of a new type of feature that we’ll be running every now and then called ‘PNL Essentials’. The purpose of these shows will be for me to just sit down with a service professional that we deal with from time to time in the photo industry to give you guys a good basic grounding on their services and to give YOU GUYS the chance to tweet in any questions you may have that are currently on your mind.

In the future I’ll be chatting with Wedding Planners, Web Designers, Marketers, Album Designers, Album Suppliers etc etc to give you guys good basic knowledge of the services they provide in the industry. Basically, its the kind of resource that I would have given my right arm for when starting out as many are not regularly published in the photographic media.

So, this week we’ll be bringing the sexy back to all things book keeping, accounting and Tax related! Its one of those areas which send most photographers running at the first mention, so we’re going to be breaking it down for you and giving you some awesome content to take away.

We are going to be joined by Keith Mortimer, a qualified accountant and partner of Kathryn Andrews over at Willow Tree Photography in Hampshire, UK.

As always, I’d love to hear your comments and feedback AND feel free to carry on the conversation! You can do all this by using the comments area below. Enjoy! RD
